Board at the mall
Board at the mall

Rage, The Dubai Mall
Rage should be a well known shop to anyone who’s been in the Middle East a while, especially anyone who has young sons.

It’s the premier skate chain in the region with branches at Dubai Festival City, Mall of the Emirates and now The Dubai Mall
as well.

All the small things
Rage has been clothing skaters and emo kids for years, with the global standard issue combination of T-shirts, jeans, flannel shirts and baseball caps but that doesn’t mean it’s not cool.

The Dubai Mall store has a huge selection of Volcom jeans (dhs285), T-shirts, shirts and other bits like stencilled belts (dhs120). It’s easy to tell who most of Rage’s customers are as there’s a higher than average nod to young teenage boys in its clothing section, with Volcom T-shirts going as small as for a four or five year old (dhs69).

If you want your tots to totally rock, invest in a pair of Volcom baby shoes, literally the size of your hand for dhs99.

Walk this way
The mid-section of the store is a small mountain range of trainers - all the major brands are represented here including Etnies, Es, Osiris and Emerica with the average cost sitting at about dhs285 (for Osiris’ brilliantly/offensively named Corpse shoes).

For the summer months, when skaters take to the beach Rage has a decent supply of everyone’s favourite flip flop brand Havaianas with prices ranging from dhs80 for boys and strangely dhs120 for girls.

Girls are a little under-represented in-store in general, with their clothing consisting pretty much of beach wear.

Board shorts, bikinis, all in one swimming costumes and wet suit tops suggest that Rage’s female customers are surfers rather than skaters.

Skater Boy
Hang on, Rage isn’t just a clothing store. We’re forgetting the most important part.

The skateboard. Unfortunately as we still haven’t progressed to Michael J Fox’s hoverboard from Back to the Future, wannabe skaters are going to need decks, trucks and wheels to get about.

Brands include Baker, Skate Mafia and Plan B for decks (all around dhs285) and Fury and Destructo for trucks (from dhs245 - 300).

Helmets (and knee pads for beginners) are also on sale.

Heaven is a half pipe
Rage Dubai Mall goes one step further than just flogging the lifestyle. If you’re going to look like a skater, the store will actually help you become a skater.

While 7DAYS was poking its nose around the store there was a strange whizz, whizz, crash noise from above.

Rather than the aquarium leaking again this worrying noise turned out to be tiny kids skating the bowl above the shop (see inset left).

The only inside bowl in Dubai has seen professional skaters turn up to pull off some moves.

The lessons from professional skaters cost dhs100 for an hour, are for up to three people with all protective gear included in the cost.

Anyone can book the lessons but kids need a parental consent form signed.

Rage Dubai Mall is on Floor 2, near Reel Cinemas and is open from 10am - 10pm Sunday - Wednesday and 10am - midnight Thursday - Saturday.

About Dubai, United Arab Emirates
Dubai (دبي) is one of the seven emirates that make up the United Arab Emirates. It is rather like an independent city-state and is the most modern and progressive emirate in the UAE.

A relatively new tourist destination, Dubai has gained in popularity in recent years. It is essentially a desert city with superb infrastructure, liberal policies (by regional standards), and excellent tourist amenities. Just 5 hrs from Europe and 3 hrs from most parts of the Middle East, the Near East, and the sub-continent of India, Dubai makes a great short break for shopping, partying, sunbathing, fine dining, sporting events, and even a few sinful pleasures. It is a city of superlatives: for the fastest, biggest, tallest, largest and highest, Dubai is the destination.

The weekly day off is on Friday. Note that, since September 2006, a harmonised weekend of Friday and Saturday has been adopted for the public sector and schools. Government departments, multi-national companies, and most schools and universities are now off on Friday and Saturday (after years of a mixed bag of Friday/Saturday and Thursday/Friday weekends). Some local companies still work a half day on Thursday with a full-day on Saturday.
