While Franco Baresi and Ian Rush were still battling it out for glory at the Emirates Airline Dubai Football Sevens yesterday, our very own ‘legends’ were basking in the glory of becoming the first-ever winners at the event.
Team 7DAYS saw off the best of the country’s media to earn a dream spot in the first final to be played on the main pitch in the inaugural tournament on Friday.
And while former stars of Scottish side Rangers may have lost their heads in a bad-tempered clash with the UAE 1990 World Cup side later in the day, our boys didn’t get stage fright and kept their heads in a clash with a strong-looking team from the Orbit Showtime Network.
Despite going a goal down, 7DAYS hit back with a fine strike from Jay Ramejkis to level the score.
After both teams failed to add to their tally the match went to a sudden-death penalty shootout.
But, having been told we were keeping AC Milan’s young professionals off their pitch, the drama was moved to an outside pitch. However, after a chorus of boos it was brought back at half-time in the pro match.
And after a mammoth shootout, which lasted 24 penalties, including one missed spot-kick from both sides, it was decided the trophy should be shared - to get Milan back on the pitch, and give the fans some relief.
Well done to Rob Broadgate, Barry King, Paul Coan, Jay Ramejkis, Greg Wilcox, Chris Fraser, John McAuley Matt Ross, Ali Al Shouk, Danny Webb and Ian Courtcliff.
And captain Greg Wilcox said: “Considering we put the team together in five minutes a couple of weeks ago and we had one ‘training’ session in Safa Park, I think we did pretty well.
“The dehydration and severe sunburn is all worth it. How many teams can say they kept Milan off the pitch!”
