Tottenham's Gareth Bale is getting ready to play in the Champions League after his side beat Blackburn to maintain their push for a top-four spot.
Spurs had a Roman Pavlyuchenko double to thank for picking up the three points at home to a spirited Rovers side who deserved something from their trip.
The Russian’s brace added to Jermain Defoe’s opener and took his goal tally to eight in his last six games.
And the win at White Hart Lane has given left-back Bale confidence that Spurs can pip Manchester City, who play at Sunderland today, Liverpool and Aston Villa to the fourth Champions League spot.
“We’re all confident here. It’s going to be a tough battle between now and the end of the season but we think we can do it,” the Welshman said.
“Every match is a crucial match, it’s very tight up there for fourth spot and every win is vital for us.”
And of Pavlyuchenko’s upturn in form, Bale added: “Everybody knows how good Pav is, he showed in Euro 2008 how good a player he is and he showed it again here.”
Redknapp’s team made the early running with Benoit Assou-Ekotto crossing for Pavlyuchenko to stab his shot into the ground and over. Blackburn then suffered a blow in the 25th minute when former Tottenham goalkeeper Paul Robinson had to limp off after suffering a leg injury, with Jason Brown coming off the bench.
And he was into the action almost immediately, pulling off a super stop to deny Defoe after Luka Modric’s pass split open the Rovers defence.
But Defoe wasn’t to be denied and he opened the scoring by stabbing in a Vedran Corluka header.
And the visitors’ chances of getting back in the game were killed off within a matter of minutes early in the second half when Pavlyuchenko struck.
Christopher Samba reduced the deficit when he headed home from Morten Gamst Pedersen’s cross with ten minutes left, but Pavlyuchenko grabbed his second five minutes later when he slotted in Bale’s cross.
And the three points has lifted Spurs boss Harry Redknapp who, like Bale, is now very hopeful of a Champions League place.
“It was a terrific result, I felt it was going to be a difficult day. Blackburn started the game well, they came out on the front foot. This was a big three points for us,” he said.
