Jose Mourinho put the boot in to old boss Roman Abramovich after his Inter Milan side spectacularly ended Chelsea’s hopes of ruling Europe.
The ‘Special One’ masterminded a vital 1-0 victory for the Italian giants over his old team, to send them spinning out of the Champions League - denying Abramovich, the billionaire owner of the Blues, the title he craves above all others.
Carlo Ancelotti, with years of European competition experience behind him, was drafted in by the Russian in a bid to finally land Europe’s premier club trophy.
But after his side triumphed in London, Mourinho warned the man who sacked him as Chelsea coach in 2007 that there were no guarantees Chelsea will ever win such a demanding competition.
“Roman is a very intelligent person and, because of that, he’s not the same person today than he was one year ago, two years, three years, five years ago. Not the same person he was when he arrived in football,” said Mourinho after a late Samuel Eto’o goal gave the Italians an emphatic 3-1 triumph on aggregate.
“Probably he thought it would be easy (to win the Champions League) when he arrived in football. It’s not easy. It’s difficult. He knows it’s not easy.
“He knows now how to read a game, understand the game, analyse the game, and knows his team lost against a team who deserved to win. Because he’s a man of fair play.
“I’m sure that he accepts the situation with fairness and class because he’ll know that Inter were the best team.”
Mourinho then admitted he was delighted to land the victory, but not because it earned him sweet revenge.
“I’m very happy. Very, very happy because we won and because we were the best team,” he added.
“I’m not very happy because they [Chelsea] lost. I’m very happy because my players are happy, my supporters are happy, my president is happy and because I worked so much for this game.
“It’s a victory as a group and a very important one for me as a coach, but not the victory of my life. That will be in the future.
“Yesterday someone asked me if I would still be special if I lost here. Now I’m not so special for Chelsea supporters who will probably never forgive me.”
