Inter Milan have blasted rumours they will lose top boss Jose Mourinho to another club this summer.
The Portuguese boss has been strongly linked with a move to Real Madrid at the end of the season.
But Inter’s technical director Marco Branca scotched rumours of any exit from the San Siro, saying losing the ‘Special One’ was ‘unthinkable’.
“Last year Mourinho was also linked with Real Madrid,” Branca said after watching Inter take pole position in Serie A once again with a 2-0 win at Lazio.
“But he is happy to be with us and we are happy to have him. “They are just journalistic fantasies. We are absolutely not thinking about it.
“Jose Mourinho’s future away from Milan is unthinkable.”
The former Chelsea coach is under contract with the Italian champions until June 2012, but speculation on his possible move to Madrid went into overdrive after Inter’s two-legged triumph over Real’s rivals Barcelona in the Champions League semi-finals. And thanks to that result Inter went into the clash at Lazio with an extra spring in their step. And it showed as goals from South American pair Walter Samuel and Thiago Motta made sure the Nerazzurri kept a two-point advantage over Roma heading into the last two league games of the campaign.
And Motta was delighted his contribution had ensured his side took a significant step towards retaining the title.
“We have overcome a big hurdle but there are still two left for the Scudetto,” the Brazilian midfielder said. “We have taken a very important step forward. I have been fortunate to score in this game and that gives me confidence. “We needed to win this game at all costs considering Roma had won their game at Parma. “We arrived in Rome ready to take home three points and we have done our duty.
“Now we must recover and think about the Coppa Italia,” he added.
Inter take on Roma at the Stadio Olimpico in tomorrow’s Coppa Italia final.
The Nerazzurri then host Chievo next before ending the season at already relegated Siena on May 16.
But if Inter win next weekend and Roma lose against Cagliari, Mourinho’s team will capture their fifth straight league title with a match to spare.
However, Roma cried foul over a capitulation by city rivals Lazio that club director Gian Paolo Montali blasted as ‘embarrassing’ after Inter’s win was cheered by the home fans, desperate to see second-placed Roma fail.
“I never thought I would see with my own eyes what I saw tonight,” Montali said. “I believe even Inter and their coach are embarrassed. I believe that today it wasn’t only Lazio who lost but also sport and, in particular, our football.”
But Inter president Massimo Moratti, a man not known for looking gift horses in the mouth , rubbished Montali’s worry.
“I think that the controversy is a problem between Roma and Lazio. It has nothing to do with us,” Moratti said
